Data Center Infrastructure Market Growth Lags, Public Cloud Flourishes: Synergy Research Group

Synergy Research Group’s new Q2 data shows that the quarterly spending on overall data center hardware and software has grown by only 5% in the last 2 years, while spending on the public cloud portion of the same has grown by 35%.

The spending on traditional, non-cloud data hardware and software has also decreased by 18%. But private cloud infrastructure market has grown, though less compared to public cloud.

The total revenues of data center infrastructure equipment (cloud & non-cloud hardware and software), in the second quarter were over $30 billion, of which 30% accounted for public cloud infrastructure.

Operating Systems, networking, servers, storage and virtualization software accounted for 96% of the overall data center infrastructure market, with the remaining being comprised by management and network security software.

“With cloud service revenues continuing to grow by over 40% per year, enterprise SaaS revenue growing by over 30%, and search/social networking revenues growing by over 20%, it is little wonder that this is all pulling through continued strong growth in spending on public cloud infrastructure,” said John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst and Research Director at Synergy Research Group.

“While some of this is essentially spend resulting from new services and applications, a lot of the increase also comes at the expense of enterprises investing in their own data centers. One outcome is that public cloud build is enabling strong growth in ODMs and white box solutions, so the data center infrastructure market is becoming ever more competitive,” he added.

Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) hold the largest part of the public cloud market, where Cisco is leading as an individual vendor, followed by Dell EMC and HPE.

Dell EMC was reportedly the leader in private cloud market in Q2, followed by HPE and Microsoft.

By segment, HPE is leading server revenues, while Dell EMC leads strong in storage, and Cisco is dominating the networking segment. Microsoft appears in the rankings majorly due to its dominance in server operating system and virtualization applications.

Other than Cisco, Dell EMC, HPE, and Microsoft, the other leading vendors in the market are IBM, Huawei, VMware, Lenovo, Oracle and NetApp.

Equinix Expands AWS Direct Connect service to Seattle Data Centers SE2 and SE3

Nearly two months after announcing availability of NetApp Private Storage for AWS in its Datacenters, Equinix today expanded the AWS Direct Connect service to its IBX data centers in Seattle, SE2 and SE3.

The announcement comes with the launch event of Equinix’s new Washington, D.C. data center DC11. The company has released a new infographic on the DC 11 facility drawing some very interesting analogies to show the state-of-the-art infrastructure that is in place. (Please see at the end of the post.)

AWS Direct Connect helps customers reduce network costs and increase throughput by establishing a private network connection between their infrastructure and Amazon Web Services.

By leveraging AWS Direct Connect inside Equinix data centers, customers can take advantage of the cost savings and performance benefits of hybrid environments. As we continue to support expansion of the AWS Direct Connect service to new markets, we are removing barriers to adoption and enabling customers to deliver on the promise of cloud computing. – Mr. Chris Sharp, GM, Cloud, Equinix.

Existing Equinix customers will also benefit from the same by connecting to AWS Direct Connect inside the SE2 and SE3. This direct connection will help them achieve millisecond latency between their infrastructure and AWS infrastructure, thereby significantly enhancing the application performance and security.

“By leveraging AWS Direct Connect inside Equinix data centers, customers can take advantage of the cost savings and performance benefits of hybrid environments,” said Mr. Chris Sharp, GM, Cloud and content, Equinix.

“As we continue to support expansion of the AWS Direct Connect service to new markets, we are removing barriers to adoption and enabling customers to deliver on the promise of cloud computing,” he added.

Many of the Equinix’s customers, including the likes of Carpathia Hosting and NetApp, have been using AWS Direct Connect with great results.

With this move, Equinix customers also get to connect to the AWS GovCloud (US) from all existing AWS Direct locations in North America. US government agencies and customers can move their sensitive workloads into the cloud by addressing specific regulatory and compliance requirements of AWS GovCloud (US).

First rolled out at Equinix’s Ashburn, Virginia data center, AWS Direct Connect has since expanded to company’s locations in Seattle, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo.

Equinix’s SE3 IBX data center opened earlier this year serves as a gateway to Asia Pacific and offers customers the opportunity to extend their footprint in the Northwestern United States and Western Canada.

Equinix announces availability of NetApp Private Storage for AWS in its Datacenters

Equinix, Inc.,the global interconnection and data center company, today announced availability of NetApp Private Storage for AWS in Equinix International Business Exchange data centers where AWS Direct Connect is deployed including the United States and Asia. The new solution enables organizations to leverage on-demand cloud compute services while retaining full control of their data; data remains secure on a private NetApp storage array.

NetApp Private Storage for AWS allows organizations to balance private and public cloud resources to best meet their business needs. This enables companies to maintain control of their data, comply with the most stringent privacy and security standards, and deliver sub-5ms performance.

Our partnership with Equinix puts NetApp in the perfect position to give businesses control over a highly flexible mix of on-premise and cloud resources. We believe this offering is truly a unique opportunity for enterprises to increase agility and reduce cost by using hybrid resources to optimize business outcomes. – Jon Mellon, VP, NetApp.
Mr. Jon Mellon, vice president and general manager, Americas Telco/Service Providers, NetApp.

Key Facts

  • Customers with heavy storage and compute needs can now combine NetApp Private Storage with AWS Direct Connect, to gain all the cost and agility benefits of public cloud while meeting rigorous compliance and security standards, retaining control over data, and maintaining high-levels of application performance.
  • When located within an Equinix IBX data center, NetApp Private Storage for AWS enables sub-5ms response times on data traveling between the hosted NetApp array and AWS. Other data center providers claiming a “direct connection” to public cloud services use long-haul circuits for the connection, which introduces additional latency and impairs performance.
  • Companies can use NetApp Private Storage for AWS for a wide range of applications, such as disaster recovery, development and test, burst, tiered data back-up and recovery, big data analytics, and more.
  • NetApp Private Storage for AWS has been deployed and tested in Equinix data centers located in Silicon Valley and Ashburn, VA. Demo platforms will be made available for testing and validation by Equinix customers in Singapore, Silicon Valley, and Ashburn IBXs.

“Our partnership with Equinix puts NetApp in the perfect position to give businesses control over a highly flexible mix of on-premise and cloud resources. We believe this offering is truly a unique opportunity for enterprises to increase agility and reduce cost by using hybrid resources to optimize business outcomes.” said Mr. Jon Mellon, vice president and general manager, Americas Telco/Service Providers, NetApp.

Cisco and NetApp to Unify Branch Office, Data Center and Public Cloud with FlexPod Architecture

Cisco  and NetApp announced on Thursday an expanded partnership to deliver new converged infrastructure innovation to unify branch office, data center and public cloud infrastructures under the FlexPod architecture. Current IT architectures comprise a fragmented combination of infrastructure along with public, private and hybrid clouds offered by different organizations and addressing distinct customer needs.

NetApp and Cisco share a common vision for the future of the data center and will continue to collaborate on innovations that connect organizations under a holistic cloud architecture. – Manish Goel, Executive vice president, NetApp.

The partnership expansion   makes Cisco and NetApp able to offer the ability to simplify deployment, management and orchestration — connecting enterprise clouds to service providers, enterprises to branch offices, consumers to enterprises, and clouds to clouds.
“The past 10 years of partnering with NetApp have proven to be successful in bringing a Cisco validated, FlexPod architecture to our customers,” Padmasree Warrior, chief technology and strategy officer, Cisco said in a statement. “Building on that success, we’re now expanding our partnership to deliver deeper technology integration and broader solution development across the unified data center for an open, scalable, Multicloud infrastructure. Together we can help our customers use their current data center investment to address the challenges of a mobile-cloud era.”

The two companies promise to deliver greater innovation, including:

  • Deeper FlexPod Architecture Integration: Cisco and NetApp are forging deeper integration across CiscoUnified Data Center solutions, NetApp FAS Storage Systems, and FlexPod ecosystem technology partners to create a common foundation for data centers and service providers, from branch office implementations to cloud-scale, multi-data center deployments. FlexPod solutions will provide the ability to manage up to 10,000 servers, allowing organizations to aggregate several FlexPod racks and enable multihop Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCOE). These solutions, tuned for service providers and distributed enterprises, enable infrastructures to be scaled with predictive performance and support.
  • Intergration of Flash Technologies: Cisco and NetApp will also integrate Flash technologies at the host and storage levels, to accelerate performance across all areas of the converged infrastructure. At the server level, applications running on Flash-optimized Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS) servers can be further accelerated with NetApp Flash Accel, while at the controller and array levels, technologies such as NetApp Flash Cache and Flash Pools can be used to access cached data faster.
  • FlexPod for Cloud Service Providers: To accelerate momentum in the service provider market Cisco and NetApp are developing flexible, massively scalable FlexPod solutions capable of handling multi-data-center service provider architectures. These solutions will use Cisco’s Virtualized Multiservice Data Center (VMDC) architecture and will include management and orchestration solutions from Cisco and from ecosystem partners such as BMC Software and, in the future, from open source providers.
  • Branch Office Solution: Cisco and NetApp are partnering to extend the capabilities of ExpressPod to meet the compute, network and storage needs of branch offices. ExpressPod shares a similar converged infrastructure approach as FlexPod, and as a result, it is ideally suited to branch office deployments with an easy upgrade path to FlexPod as the needs of the branch grow. This easy-to-deploy architecture can be configured to offer greater interoperability with the core organizational data center, enabling branch locations to take advantage of some of the biggest cost-saving trends in IT, such as virtualization and cloud computing.
  • FlexPod Application Validation: Cisco and NetApp are expanding solution coverage to add more mission-critical applications and private cloud solutions for the datacenter. Mission critical solutions include Oracle Database and applications, SAP® BusinessObjects™ business intelligence and the SAP HANA® platform, and private cloud offerings include Microsoft private cloud and Citrix CloudPlatform.
