Microsoft launches Azure Bastion to provide secure, remote access to Azure VMs

Microsoft has announced a new managed PaaS service that will provide enterprises secure and seamless RDP and SSH access to virtual machines directly through the Azure Portal.

Called Azure Bastion, the new service has been designed as an additional safeguard for the organizations that don’t want to connect to Azure VMs through public internet connections, as it can sometimes lead to the security and connectivity issues.

“Azure Bastion is a new managed PaaS service that provides seamless RDP and SSH connectivity to your virtual machines over the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This is completed without any exposure of the public IPs on your virtual machines,” Yousef Khalidi, Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

“Azure Bastion provisions directly in your Azure Virtual Network, providing bastion host or jump server as-a-service and integrated connectivity to all virtual machines in your virtual networking using RDP/SSH directly from and through your browser and the Azure portal experience. This can be executed with just two clicks and without the need to worry about managing network security policies.”

With the Azure Bastion, users can start an RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) or SSH (Secure Shell) remote connection directly from the Azure portal using a web browser over SSL. This service will allow the users to access Azure VMs using a private IP address (see diagram below).

In future release, Microsoft plans to integrate Azure Active Directory with the Azure Bastion. The tech giant will also add seamless single sign-on capabilities, use of Azure Active Directory identities, as well as multifactor authentication to extend two-factor authentication to RDP/SSH connections.

There will also be support for RDP/SSH clients to enable them to connect securely with Azure Virtual Machines via Azure Bastion service.

Azure Bastion is currently available in preview.

Microsoft to integrate Truffle blockchain development platform with Azure

Microsoft is joining forces with blockchain startup Truffle to integrate Truffle’s developer tools with Azure. The aim is to provide quality developer experience and DevOps to enterprise blockchains.

Truffle delivers a development platform, testing framework and asset pipeline for the Ethereum blockchain. It comes with built-in smart contract compilation, linking, deployment and binary management, which can be easily accessed by the customers.

The platform has been downloaded over 3 million times and is a preferred choice of developers seeking tools to accelerate the smart contracts and front-end app development process.

Recently, Microsoft had added an extension to its Visual Studio Code that leverages the Azure services and Truffle Suite. This extension helps developers to create and compile smart contracts. They can also test the contracts locally using the Ganache testing environment, as well as inside the Azure DevOps pipelines.

“Early on it was very clear Ethereum developers needed professional, modern development tools. With enterprise’s growing adoption of blockchain technology, Truffle recognizes the importance of this opportunity to bring our blockchain-native experience to enterprise developers across the world through our partnership with Microsoft,” said Tim Coulter, Truffle CEO and Founder.

The integration of Truffle with Azure will enable developers to build advanced, secured blockchain-based applications, streamline workflow with GitHub integration and deploy on real-time basis.

“Our developers expect a world-class experience from Microsoft backed by the best of Azure and Open Source. The Truffle integration demonstrates our continued investment in working with the open source community. Integrating Truffle Suite with Visual Studio Code and Azure DevOps will deliver a world-class developer experience for customers targeting Azure Blockchain Service and public Ethereum,” said Marc Mercuri, Principal Program Manager, Azure Blockchain Engineering.

Developed on Azure, and being true to the mission of Truffle, the team of Truffle will remain free for open source users.

Truffle tool has also been integrated with Quorum, the open-source Ethereum blockchain used by JPMorgan, developed by Axoni, is being used by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) now.

Nutanix eyes multi-cloud DaaS opportunity as it acquires Frame

Nutanix, the hyper-converged infrastructure appliances and software-defined storage provider, is acquiring the virtual desktop startup Frame (Mainframe2).

Frame provides a platform that supports multi-cloud delivery models for desktops-as-a-service (DaaS). This platform enables IT teams to deliver virtual desktops from public clouds and enterprise datacenter with common tooling and management constructs.

The multi-cloud architecture for DaaS offers seamless disaster recovery and makes it easier for enterprises to migrate applications across environments. It also helps in delivering both traditional and cloud-native applications from a single IT environment.

By acquiring it, Nutanix will integrate Frame’s DaaS technology into the Nutanix Xi Cloud. The integrated offering will initially support 1-click desktop instances on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and then expand to other cloud environments.

Gartner stated in a report that “interest in DaaS has resurfaced as a hot topic with midsize organizations that have progressed and matured their cloud strategies.” The analyst firm predicted that 50% of the new VDI users will be deployed on DaaS platforms.

“Frame’s cloud-native technology represents everything we believe to be true in the market – customers want easy-to-use, high performance and cost optimized solutions that just work across the entirety of their infrastructure,” said Sunil Potti, Chief Product and Development Officer at Nutanix.

“We are committed to providing our customers with a robust multi-cloud DaaS offering through Frame while working with our partners to enable best-in-class enterprise VDI. We are delighted to add the Frame technology, and the innovative thinkers behind it, to our family.”

This open a new path of opportunities for Nutanix as the company already supports virtual desktop use cases with its appliances. Acquisition of Frame will further help the company to target midsized organizations.

Nutanix will continue to support large-scale VDI projects including VMware Horizon View, Citrix Ready certified for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp. Addition of Frame’s technology will provide Nutanix customers another deployment option to deliver virtual desktops.

“Companies desperately need a cloud-native desktop solution for their multi-cloud environments which combines the performance of on-prem offerings with the flexibility and cost optimization of the cloud. That’s why we built Frame,” said Nikola Bozinovic, Founder and CEO at Frame.

“Nutanix shares our vision of simplifying critical IT functions so companies can save money, save time and still achieve exceptional performance no matter their underlying infrastructure, and we’re so proud to be joining the family.”

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close next month. Following the closure of acquisition, Frame will be available on third-party clouds from Azure and AWS.

Azure SQL Data Sync now generally available

Microsoft recently announced the general availability of its Azure SQL Data Sync solution, which allows users to synchronize data between Azure SQL Database and other SQL endpoints.

Built on Azure SQL Database, the SQL Data Sync allows synchronization of data unidirectionally as well as bidirectionally across multiple SQL databases and SQL Server instances.

“It enables hybrid SQL deployment and allows local data access from both Azure and on-premises application. It also allows you to deploy your data applications globally with a local copy of data in each region, and keep data synchronized across all the regions,” said Xiaochen Wu, Senior Program Manager, Azure SQL Database.

Microsoft reckons that Azure SQL Data Sync will reduce the impact of network latency and connection failure rate on applications, resulting in improved application response time and reliability.

The processing of Data Sync takes place in three steps— tracking data changes, synchronizing data, and resolving conflicts. The changes are tracked using insert, update, and delete triggers.

The technology has been available in preview for a while. Since its preview launch, Microsoft has updated SQL Data Sync with a number of improvements, including more reliable configuration workflow and more intuitive user experience. Users can now load database schema more efficiently using the new SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) library.

Also, Microsoft has made it GDPR compliant, with end-to-end synchronization workflow and data encryption.

The new offering will be more appealing to the customers moving to cloud and would like to move some of their application in Azure. It will be also useful for enterprises spanning multiple regions, having distributed applications.

Microsoft and Red Hat bring OpenShift to Azure as a jointly managed service

Microsoft and Red Hat are expanding their existing partnership on cloud computing. The companies are bringing Red Hat OpenShift on Azure, to enable developers run container applications on public cloud and on-premises.

OpenShift is a Kubernetes container orchestration platform that builds, runs, and scales the applications in cloud, while Azure is Microsoft’s cloud platform. OpenShift on Azure will be offered as a fully managed service in cloud.

“Microsoft and Red Hat are aligned in our vision to deliver simplicity, choice and flexibility to enterprise developers building cloud-native applications. Today, we’re combining both companies’ leadership in Kubernetes, hybrid cloud and enterprise operating systems to simplify the complex process of container management, with an industry-first solution on Azure,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, Cloud and Enterprise Group, Microsoft.

Red Hat and Microsoft will together manage, engineer and design the OpenShift on Azure. The joint solution will support the customers of both the companies, and it will be jointly managed by Red Hat and Microsoft.

The new offering will help developers to use OpenShift and move apps between on-premises and Azure. They will be able to securely connect between Azure and on-premises OpenShift clusters with hybrid networking.

Microsoft said that the joint solution will allow developers to access a number of Azure services like Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Machine Learning, and Azure SQL DB.

Microsoft will enable hybrid cloud support for OpenShift on Azure Stack, so that customers can develop, deploy and manage cloud apps on Microsoft infrastructure. Red Hat OpenShift on Azure will include support for Windows containers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux containers for multiarchitecture container management.

Furthermore, it will have integrated Microsoft SQL Server across OpenShift, offering more options to harness data.

“Very few organizations are able to fully silo their IT operations into a solely on-premises or public cloud footprint; instead, it’s a hybrid mixture of these environments that presents a path toward digital transformation,” said Paul Cormier, president, Products and Technologies, Red Hat. “By extending our partnership with Microsoft, we’re able to offer the industry’s most comprehensive Kubernetes platform on a leading public cloud, providing the ability for customers to more easily harness innovation across the hybrid cloud without sacrificing production stability.”

Visual Studio Enterprise and Visual Studio Professional subscribers will get Red Hat Enterprise Linux credits. It will allow developers to work with Java, .NET, and other frameworks on the OpenShift on Azure.

Worldwide public cloud market to hit $186.4 billion, with hyperscale cloud providers dominating it: Gartner

According to a new analysis by Gartner, public cloud services market is projected to grow from $153.5 billion in 2017 to $186.4 billion in 2018, which is a rise of 21.4 percent.

Amongst the cloud segments, IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-service) was identified as the fastest growing segment, predicted to grow 35.9 percent in 2018, reaching $40.8 billion, led by leading IaaS providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

SaaS (Software-as-a-service) was again identified as one of the largest segments of the cloud market with a revenue growth expected of 22.2 percent, to hit $73.6 billion in 2018. Gartner also predicted that by 2021, SaaS will reach 45 percent of the total application software spending.

SaaS based application models are becoming a preferred choice for most of the enterprises. Sid Nag, who is a research director at Gartner, thinks that the SaaS demands are changing with users seeking more purpose-built solutions that can meet their specific business outcomes.

Under PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) segment, dbPaaS (database platform as a service) is seeing the highest demand, expected to hit $10 billion by the year 2021. As a result, the hyperscale cloud providers are expanding their range of services to include dbPaaS.

Talking about the high demand of dbPaaS, Mr. Nag said that the customers should explore other dbPaaS service offers apart from the one offered by the large service providers, to avoid any lock-in.

Despite the high forecast rates, Gartner expects the growth rate to stabilize from 2018 onwards, due to the maturity that cloud services might gain within the IT segment.

One of the primary challenges here is to avoid vendor lock-in. With most of the big cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft etc. offering major cloud services, companies that once use any vendor’s cloud platform can find it very expensive and complicated to move away again.

Gartner said that this scenario might give rise to new demands by customers who want easy migration of their apps and data, without any penalties.

Microsoft updates Microsoft 365 to meet GDPR compliance 

Microsoft announced a number of new information protection capabilities and updates to its Microsoft 365, in response to GDPR which will come into effect after 25th May.

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is aimed at protecting and empowering the data privacy of all the citizens of Europe, as well as reshaping the way organizations in Europe approach data privacy. The organizations found to be non-compliant after May 25th may face heavy fines.

It is the responsibility of an organization to meet all regulatory requirements when the data is on-premises. However, when the data is moved to cloud, it becomes the responsibility of Cloud Service Provider as well.

The updates in Microsoft 365 include general availability of Compliance Manager for Azure, Dynamics 365, and Office 365 Business and Enterprise subscribers. Compliance Manager, available for Preview since November 2017, enables organizations to perform on-going risk assessments, and makes it transparent to customers how Microsoft protects their data.

Compliance Manager includes Compliance Score feature, which allows organizations to gain visibility into compliance stature of organization with a risk-based score reference. It is available for Office 365 users.

Microsoft also announced general availability of Azure Information Protection scanner, which enables users to automatically discover, classify, label, and protect documents in on-premises repositories like File servers and on-premises SharePoint servers.

The new intelligent compliance solutions in Microsoft 365 will help organizations to protect sensitive data, support data protection in apps and across all cloud services. Organizations can use it to scan hybrid and on-premises repositories by periodically configuring it.

Additionally, Microsoft is previewing Consistent labeling schema experience, which will be used to eliminate the need to create labels in two different places across information protection solutions in Microsoft 365.

Microsoft said that its new solutions will be helpful in efficiently managing compliance risks and leverage the cloud to identify, protect and monitor sensitive data to support GDPR compliance.

Microsoft to use Cisco Solution Support for better network connectivity with Azure ExpressRoute

Microsoft has teamed up with Cisco to provide customers more secure network connectivity to Microsoft Azure cloud platform with Azure ExpressRoute.

Azure ExpressRoute helps the users to establish a private and direct connection to Microsoft cloud services, like Microsoft Azure, Office 365, and Dynamics 365. It also enables them to extend their on-premises networks into Microsoft cloud, which helps in managing and running the business-critical applications and services.

The enterprises that move to cloud from a traditional IT model face a number of cloud challenges, like increased complexity, loss of speed and data integrity, limited connectivity and management hassles, among others.

To overcome these challenges, Cisco will now provide its Solution Support for Azure ExpressRoute, to build a new network practice which provides fast, reliable, and predictable private connectivity.

“To help address on-premises issues, which often require deep technical networking expertise, we continue to partner closely with Cisco to provide a better customer networking experience. Working together, we can solve the most challenging networking issues encountered by enterprise customers using Azure ExpressRoute,” wrote Yousef Khalidi CVP, Azure Networking, in a blog post.

The Cisco Solution Support offers additional support and guidance options for Azure ExpressRoute, helping the customers on premises end of the network. The customers will also have support from Cisco solution experts to quickly resolve their issues and connect to Microsoft Cloud Platform.

“With our customers in mind, Cisco is extending our Solution Support portfolio with a new network practice and offer for Azure ExpressRoute. This new offer for networking targeting the customers on premises network, allows us to leverage our world class networking expertise to assist customers using Cisco networking products and Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute to connect to the Microsoft Azure Cloud Platform,” wrote Joe Pinto, Senior VP, Cisco’s Technical Services Group, in a separate blog post.

Furthermore, Microsoft has integrated Network Performance Monitor (NPM) into ExpressRoute, which will enable customers to monitor connectivity to PaaS services (Azure Storage), as well as SaaS services (Office 365). This will provide more deep visibility into ExpressRoute network traffic. It will be generally available in mid-February in six regions.

Additionally, Microsoft has merged public and Microsoft peering for simplified management and configuration of ExpressRoute. The ExpressRoute configuration needed customers to have ExpressRoute circuits in two different cities. Microsoft is planning to provide the second ExpressRoute site in the cities which already have an ExpressRoute site. As of now, the second peering location is available in Singapore only.
