Acronis expands APIs and hands the keys to third-party developers as well

Acronis is expanding its APIs and allowing even the third-party developers to build on the Acronis Cyber Platform.

Acronis Cyber Platform is the core of the company’s existing services. It features over 100 application programming interfaces (APIs) supported by software development kits (SDKs) and sample code. It was previously available only to developers at Acronis and selected integration partners including Microsoft, Google, and ConnectWise.

The company is now opening the platform with new open APIs to third-party developers at independent software vendors (ISVs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and service providers.

These developers can build on the Acronis Cyber Platform and extend the functionalities of their applications for better control, ease, efficiency, reliability, and security.

For instance, they will be able to create new data sources, data locations, data management capability, and integrate their apps with Acronis cyber protection solutions.

Furthermore, access to the Acronis Cyber Platform will also enable them to integrate Acronis into their apps, system, or marketplace. This will help ISVs, OEMs, service providers, resellers, and customers to drive new revenue and meet more demands of themselves and end-users.

“Extending our proven cyber protection solutions with the opening of our platform and its APIs brings our vision to market and presents an opportunity for ISVs, OEMs, service providers and developers at organizations to extend their applications and extend the functionality of the Acronis suite or cyber protection solutions and make them available to our partner ecosystem,” commented Acronis’ Founder and CEO Serguei “SB” Beloussov.

“We’re known for engineering excellence and we hope to see rapid innovation by developers around the world as they leverage the massive growth of the world’s data, coming from sources such as AI, IoT, edge, and cloud. ISVs, OEMs, service providers, customers and partners can differentiate and drive revenue for their businesses by building on the Acronis Cyber Platform and accessing the Acronis value chain.”

Oracle launches new cloud native framework for developers

Oracle has launched a new set of cloud native managed services and on-premises software for developers. Called Oracle Cloud Native Framework, the new solution capitalizes on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Linux Cloud Native Environment.

More and more organizations are looking to embrace open source solutions and cloud capabilities. However, complex choices, lack of training and fear of vendor lock-in have become barriers to them.

Oracle wants to remove these barriers with the new cloud native capabilities and offerings, whether the organizations are deploying models on public cloud, on premises or hybrid cloud.

Since Oracle is a platinum member of Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), it leverages open standards to provide developers the right solutions to meet the broad deployment requirements.

“With the growing popularity of the CNCF as a unifying and organizing force in the cloud native ecosystem and organizations increasingly embracing multi cloud and hybrid cloud models, developers should have the flexibility to build and deploy their applications anywhere they choose without the threat of cloud vendor lock-in. Oracle is making this a reality,” said Don Johnson, executive vice president, product development, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Oracle Cloud Native Framework includes Oracle Functions, Streaming, Resource Manager, Monitoring, Notification Service, and Events.

Oracle Functions is a new serverless cloud service called Oracle Functions, which is based on the open source Fn Project. It is a scalable and multi-tenant solution that allow developers to focus on writing code to meet business demands, without much expertise about infrastructure concepts.

Resource Manager is a managed service for provisioning Oracle Cloud Infrastructure resources and services. It uses Terraform to reduce configuration errors and increase productivity by managing infrastructure declaratively.

Monitoring, Notification Service, and Events are services for observability and analysis of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). As an integrated service, the Monitoring service provides metrics from all the resources and services in OCI. There are alarms for developers to track the metrics and act on them in case the metrics vary or exceed defined thresholds.

The Notification service enables broadcasting of messages to distributed components like email and PagerDuty. Whereas, the Events service allows developers to respond to changes in the resources of OCI.

Acquisition Cloud Cloud News Newss

Microsoft is reportedly buying open-source development platform GitHub

Microsoft is reportedly marking one of the biggest tech acquisition in 2018, buying the leading open-source software development platform GitHub.

People familiar with the matter told Business Insider that GitHub has been struggling to find a CEO since former CEO Chris Wanstrath announced resignation nine months back. The company has failed to generate profits. Microsoft might officially announce the acquisition earlier this week.

GitHub is one of the world’s leading software development platform, hosting 27 million developers who are working on 80 million repositories of code. The top tech companies including Facebook, Apple, Google, and IBM use GitHub to host and review code, manage projects, and build software.

In fact, over 1000 of developers from Microsoft itself use GitHub to write code for projects hosted on the site. GitHub has preferred Microsoft partially because of the impressive leadership of CEO Satya Nadella, said one of the sources. Microsoft was in talks to team up with GitHub, but ended up discussing on acquisition.

“The companies have had on-and-off conversations over the years, but talks have grown more serious in the past few weeks,” sources told Business Insider.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes that computing has reached everywhere, and is embedded in places, things, homes, and cities. The world has become a computer itself. And if the world is a computer, the developers are a new seat of power.

GitHub is a primary vehicle for developers that allows them to collaborate and share ideas along with writing code. It is like LinkedIn for developers. The acquisition of GitHub will help Microsoft to bring its cloud and development tools to more developers.

Google announces price cuts for NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and preemptible local SSDs

Google recently announced price cut of up to 36 percent for NVIDIA Tesla GPUs that are offered via its on-demand Google Compute Engine virtual machines. With this, in US regions, the cost for using K80 GPU’s is $0.45 per hour while for P100 machines, it will be $1.46 per hour.

Google Compute Engine offers powerful GPUs that can be added to users’ VM instances. These GPUs can be used to accelerate specific workloads on VM instances like machine learning and data processing.

Scientists, engineers and artists require access to large parallel computational power. Hence, Google offers VMs with GPUs that have the capacity to boost performance, and by connecting them to NVIDIA Tesla K80 and P100s GPUs, Google has managed to bring maximum flexibility to the developers. A number of applications like molecular modelling and physical stimulations will benefit from the hundreds of cores available on the GPUs.

Google, also as a bonus, announced lowering the prices of preemptible local SSDs by nearly 40 percent as compared to on-demand Local SSDs.

Google said in its blog, “We hope that the price reduction on NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and preemptible Local SSDs unlocks new opportunities and helps you solve more interesting business, engineering and scientific problems.”

Google has targeted the price cuts at developers, who can now run their own machine learning workloads in the cloud without worrying about the cost constraints.

The announcement has come a few days before AWS’s annual conference that will kick off on 27th November in Las Vegas, where AWS is expected to make a number of revelations related to AI and Machine Learning.

It will be interesting to see whether AWS also announces some more price cuts or not. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

Developers to get security alerts for known vulnerabilities with new GitHub feature

GitHub – one of the largest development platforms, launched a new security feature that has the capability to search project dependencies in JavaScript and Ruby, and alert project owners on finding any known vulnerability.

Earlier in mid-October, GitHub had introduced a Dependency Graph section in the Project’s Insights tab that show a tree-like structure of all the loaded libraries. The new feature is the next step to improve the overall experience of managing and running projects in GitHub.

As soon as a new vulnerability is detected, the user will get notified along with the known fixes to the issue.

This feature is a major step towards ensuring code’s security in the projects running on GitHub. With GitHub now hosting nearly 67 million of repositories and projects that rely on software libraries and software packages that do not get updated frequently, security is major concern.

Developers can keep a check on the security alerts that can be accessed under Insights tab of any project. Users will also get email notifications whenever GitHub updates its database with information about new vulnerability.

Source: GitHub

The security feature will be automatically enabled for the public repositories while for private repositories, owners will need to opt in security alerts in their repository setting or simply by allowing access in the dependency graph section of their repository’s insights tab. The user will get suggestions on recommended updates and for moving to a safer version.

The vulnerabilities disclosed will be those that have CVE IDs – disclosed publicly from the NVD (National Vulnerability Database). However, GitHub plans to improve the vulnerability identification process.

The company also plans to extend support for Dependency Graph and security alerts which is currently enabled on Javascript and Ruby, and will include Python in 2018.
