Oracle unveils new solution to eliminate challenges in migrating database to Autonomous Cloud

Oracle has introduced a new autonomous and isolated private database cloud service called Autonomous Database. The company aims to provide enterprises high-level security, reliability, and control for database workload, so that they can migrate to cloud without any concerns.

“Autonomous Database Dedicated enables customers to easily transform from manually-managed independent databases on premises, to a fully-autonomous and isolated private database cloud within the Oracle Public Cloud,” said Juan Loaiza, executive vice president, Mission-Critical Database Technologies, Oracle.

“Our Autonomous Database Dedicated service eliminates the concerns enterprise customers previously had about security, isolation, and operational policies when moving to cloud.”

Oracle’s Autonomous Database is a cloud-based solution that uses machine learning algorithms to enable self-driving, self-repairing, and self-securing capabilities. These capabilities will automate the key management and security processes in database systems, such as patching, tuning and upgrading.

Oracle Autonomous Database Dedicated service will offer a customizable private database cloud to customers. This cloud will run on dedicated Exadata Infrastructure in Oracle Cloud. This means that enterprises will be able to run databases of all sizes, scale, and criticality using the new solution.

The company claimed that its new offering comes with a unique architecture to provide complete workload isolation so that the databases remain protected from both external threats and malicious internal users. It also provides customizable operational policies, so that customers have better control over database provisioning, software updates, and availability.

For developers, Oracle announced the availability of Oracle Application Express (APEX), Oracle SQL Developer Web, and Oracle REST Data Services.

Using APEX, the developers can create scalable and secure enterprise apps faster. They can also use it for importing spreadsheets and developing single source of truth web apps. It will now come pre-installed and pre-configured in Oracle Autonomous Database.

Oracle SQL Developer Web is a web interface for developers to effortlessly run queries, create tables and generate schema diagrams. Whereas, Oracle REST Data Services support will enable developers to build and deploy RESTful services for Oracle Autonomous Database.

Microsoft launches Azure Bastion to provide secure, remote access to Azure VMs

Microsoft has announced a new managed PaaS service that will provide enterprises secure and seamless RDP and SSH access to virtual machines directly through the Azure Portal.

Called Azure Bastion, the new service has been designed as an additional safeguard for the organizations that don’t want to connect to Azure VMs through public internet connections, as it can sometimes lead to the security and connectivity issues.

“Azure Bastion is a new managed PaaS service that provides seamless RDP and SSH connectivity to your virtual machines over the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This is completed without any exposure of the public IPs on your virtual machines,” Yousef Khalidi, Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

“Azure Bastion provisions directly in your Azure Virtual Network, providing bastion host or jump server as-a-service and integrated connectivity to all virtual machines in your virtual networking using RDP/SSH directly from and through your browser and the Azure portal experience. This can be executed with just two clicks and without the need to worry about managing network security policies.”

With the Azure Bastion, users can start an RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) or SSH (Secure Shell) remote connection directly from the Azure portal using a web browser over SSL. This service will allow the users to access Azure VMs using a private IP address (see diagram below).

In future release, Microsoft plans to integrate Azure Active Directory with the Azure Bastion. The tech giant will also add seamless single sign-on capabilities, use of Azure Active Directory identities, as well as multifactor authentication to extend two-factor authentication to RDP/SSH connections.

There will also be support for RDP/SSH clients to enable them to connect securely with Azure Virtual Machines via Azure Bastion service.

Azure Bastion is currently available in preview.

VMware brings cloud experience to entire data center with acquisition of Avi Networks

VMware is acquiring Avi Networks to advance its strategy for bringing the public cloud experience to the entire data center.

Avi Networks is a leading provider of multi-cloud app delivery services. Hundreds of organizations around the world including Fortune 500 companies are using its services.

It provides a Software Load Balancer, Intelligent Web Application Firewall, Advanced Analytics and Monitoring and a Universal Service Mesh. Once the acquisition closes, VMware will integrate load balancing capabilities of Avi with VMware NSX Data Center to help enterprises overcome the complexity of legacy systems and ADC appliances.

The Avi platform automates application delivery with closed-loop analytics, template-driven configuration, and integration with management products. It uses advanced analytics to monitor performance. Avi technology is secure, dynamic and multi-cloud fabric that runs across private and public clouds enabling the applications to remain unchanged while running in different computing environments.

“Upon close, customers will be able to benefit from a full set of software-defined L2-7 application networking and security services, on-demand elasticity, real time insights, simplified troubleshooting, and developer self-service.” said Amit Pandey, chief executive officer, Avi Networks.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of VMware’s fiscal year 2020, which closes on August 2. This transaction won’t have material impact on fiscal 2020 operating results.

VMware acquires Bitnami to augment multi-cloud efforts

VMware is acquiring the leading application packaging solutions provider Bitnami to expand its multi-cloud strategy.

Bitnami provides a large catalogue of click-to-deploy apps and development stack for cloud and Kubernetes environments. The company offers validated and highly secure application packages to allow developers to build new apps and services on the cloud. This helps them to deploy the apps more easily and quickly.

With its solutions, Bitnami simplifies the delivery of applications in multi-cloud. This will complement the multi-cloud strategy of VMware.

VMware allows customers to rapidly extend, migrate and protect their VMware environment to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) using VMware Cloud on AWS. The recently extended partnership with Microsoft brings VMware experience on Azure as well.

With the acquisition of Bitnami, VMware will be able to take further steps and play a major role in the application environments of customers.

“Our goal is to accelerate the application “builder’s journey” by delivering simplified ways to leverage open source software applications and frameworks; and free the “builders” to focus on building differentiated capabilities versus worrying about deployment and infrastructure,” wrote VMware in a blog post.

“We plan to do this across all clouds and formats—VMs, containers and SaaS offerings. Our goal will be to provide equivalency not abstraction across the different cloud platforms.”vmware acquires bitnami

Following the closure of the acquisition, VMware will continue to invest in the products and projects of Bitnami. On the other hand, Bitnami will allow the VMware customers to easily deploy the applications on any cloud, and in an optimal format like VMs, containers, and Kubernetes.

Microsoft rolls out new AI capabilities in Azure for developers and enterprises

Ahead of the Microsoft Build 2019 Developer Conference, the tech giant is rolling out a number of new tools and services to help developers and enterprises to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

“AI is fueling the next wave of transformative innovations that will change the world. With Azure AI, our goal is to empower organizations to apply AI across the spectrum of their business to engage customers, empower employees, optimize operations and transform products,” wrote Eric Boyd, Corporate Vice President, Azure AI, in a blog post.

Project Brainwave’s Azure Machine Learning Hardware Accelerated Models are now generally available. Announced for a preview last year, it helps in speeding up the training of AI models. Further, Microsoft has pushed the preview of these models for edge computing, in collaboration with Dell Technologies and HPE.

The company is adding support for ONNX Runtime for NVIDIA TensorRT and Intel nGraph to provide high-speed inferencing on NVIDIA and Intel chipsets.

Azure Machine Learning service is getting new capabilities to allow developers, data scientists, and DevOps professionals to increase productivity, operationalize models at scale, and innovate faster. For instance, there is an automated machine learning UI that will allow customers to train ML models just with a few clicks.

Azure Machine Learning will also have a zero-code visual interface, and notebooks to provide developers and data scientists a code-first ML experience.

The hardware accelerated models are also becoming generally available in Azure Machine Learning. These models run on FPGAs in Azure for low-latency and low-cost inferencing. For Databox Edge, it is currently available in preview.

The Machine Learning service is also getting MLOps or DevOps for ML capabilities. These capabilities include Azure DevOps integration to enable Azure DevOps to be used to manage the entire ML lifecycle.

Furthermore, Microsoft is also previewing a new service called Azure Open Datasets to help customers improve the accuracy of ML models using rich, curated open data and reduce the time spent on data discovery and preparation.
