HPE buys supercomputing giant Cray for $1.3 billion

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is acquiring the supercomputer leader Cray in a deal worth $1.3 billion. The company aims to address the challenges driven by the explosion of data.

Cray holds its position among the top 100 supercomputer installations globally. Founded in 1972, Cray provides high-end supercomputing solutions for challenging and data-intensive workloads. The company delivers its supercomputing systems through the current generation XC and CS platforms, as well as the Shasta series platform.

The supercomputing leader recently announced an Exascale supercomputer contract with the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The contract was valued at over $600 million, enabling innovative research and AI at scale.

HPE will combine the deep supercomputing capabilities of Cray with its cutting-edge technologies, stepping ahead on the strategy to tackle the most data-intensive challenges of customers.

Modern technologies like AI, machine learning, big data and analytics, and the changing demands of customers for data-intensive workloads are exploding the amount of data generation. This is driving the expansion of high-performance computing (HPC).

With Cray acquisition, HPE will establish a broad portfolio of computing, storage, interconnect, software and services in the HPC and AI segments.

HPE already sees HPC as a key element of its vision and growth strategy. It provides a number of HPC solutions, which include HPE Apollo and SGI. The company will now be well positioned to strengthen its existing portfolio with the foundational technologies of Cray.

“Answers to some of society’s most pressing challenges are buried in massive amounts of data,” said Antonio Neri, President and CEO, HPE.

“Only by processing and analyzing this data will we be able to unlock the answers to critical challenges across medicine, climate change, space and more. 95% of total datacenter traffic to come from cloud by 2021: Cisco report 

Global cloud traffic will nearly triple over the next five years, accounting for 95% of total datacenter traffic by 2021, as per Cisco GCI report.

Cisco Global Cloud Index (2016-2021), company’s seventh annual report, focuses on data center virtualization and cloud computing. The report reveals that both consumer and business applications are driving the cloud adoption.

The datacenter traffic is rapidly growing, and it global cloud IP traffic will touch 19.5 ZB (zettabytes) per year by 2021, up from just 6 ZB a year in 2016. On the other hand, Big data will reach 403 EB (exabytes) by 2021, growing 8-times from 25 EB in 2016. It alone will represent 30% of the overall datacenter traffic.

With rapid rise in demands for datacenter and cloud resources, the large-scale public cloud datacenters called hyperscale datacenters have been developed. Hyperscale datacenter count in 2016 was 338, which will grow to 628 by 2021, representing 53% of all installed datacenter servers.  

“Data center application growth is clearly exploding in this new multicloud world. This projected growth will require new innovations especially in the areas of public, private and hybrid clouds,” said Kip Compton, Vice President of Cisco’s Cloud Platform and Solutions Group.

According to the study, 94% of workloads and compute instances will be on cloud data center, while only 6% by traditional datacenters by 2021.

Of the total cloud workloads and compute instances, SaaS will comprise 75%, followed by IaaS (16%) and PaaS (9%) in 2021.  

The improvements in data control and datacenter governance have reduced the security issues, which are major barriers to cloud adoption. Additionally, the advanced technologies like internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) will also increase datacenter demands.

The IoT applications like smart cars, smart cities, connected health and digital utilities need storage solutions and scalable computing. The IoT connections are expected to reach 13.7 billion by 2021, up from 5.8 billion in 2016. The data created by IoT devices will grow from 218 ZB per year in 2016, to 847 ZB per year in 2021.

Cisco GCI 2016–2021 report concludes that along with the growth in datacenter traffic, the datacenters are also streamlining with architectural innovations like NFV and SDN. The cloud traffic will more than triple over the forecast period, where the major traffic will be enabled by rapid extension of datacenter virtualization.

A flashback into WHD.usa 2017 – the global event series for hosting and cloud industry

A part of the global series of event for the hosting, cloud and internet infrastructure industries – WHD.usa 2017 was successfully conducted this year too.

The atmosphere at the two-day event, held at Tropicana, Las Vegas, NV, USA was rife with excitement, with the dignitaries networking, exchanging knowledge, gaining insights and some fun, of course!

The list of attendees included hosting and cloud professionals from across North America. It also included senior executives, technologists and other decision makers from top hosting companies, hardware manufacturers, software vendors, and content creators.

The attendees were able to gain a lot of insights on the latest hosting trends, understood the importance of forming effective partnerships, and there were many new product announcements too.

Cloud Storage provider Scality has closed its series C funding round for $22 million, thus bringing the total invested capital since company inception to $35M. The company also announced that it has been named “Cool Vendor” by Gartner, an IT research firm.

Progress Software Launches Progress Pacific Application Platform as a Service; Acquires Rollbase Inc

Progress Software Corporation today announced launch of Progress Pacific, an Application Platform as a Service for building and managing “connected apps” on any cloud, mobile or social platform. With Progress Pacific, businesses and ISVs can to choose the data sources, deployment environments and business logic tools that best fit their needs.

In addition to the new launch, Progress today also announced acquisition of California-based Rollbase Inc., a privately held ISV. Rollbase, Inc was recently named “One of the Cool Vendors in PaaS” by Gartner, Inc.

Progress Software plans to incorporate Rollbase’s technology with its products such as Progress DataDirect, OpenEdge and Corticon, and uniting them into one cloud-based platform. The whole aspect of developing an application – from design, setting up services, to connecting to data sources can now be done from this single platform.
